How to Plan and Launch Your First EP as an Unsigned Band
: Stop just uploading tracks - build a proper campaign that creates real momentum

Releasing an EP is a major moment for any unsigned band. It shows you've got more than a single. It tells a story. It defines your sound. But too many EPs get quietly uploaded to Spotify with no plan, no build-up and no follow-through - and they disappear within days.
Your first EP deserves better. Here’s how to turn it into a real launch - one that builds hype, attracts press and gives fans something to remember.
Start Planning 6–8 Weeks Before Release
A solid EP rollout takes time. You don’t need a label or manager - just a step-by-step plan. The earlier you start, the more impact you’ll have.
At minimum, block out:
- 2 weeks of teaser content
- 1–2 single releases
- 1–2 music videos or live sessions
- A strong release day campaign
- 2–4 weeks of post-release content and push
This gives your EP a long tail - instead of one short pop.
Choose a Lead Single (Or Two)
Pick your strongest track and release it 3–4 weeks before the EP drops. This helps:
- Build hype
- Get early playlist coverage
- Create buzz with press or blogs
- Give fans something to latch onto
If you’ve got time, follow up with a second single or acoustic version closer to release day.
Get Your Visuals Locked In
- EP cover
- Promo photos
- Social banners
- Visualisers or music video footage
Use consistent branding across everything — it makes your unsigned band look organised, professional and memorable.
Create a Pre-Release Page
Use tools like Linktree, Hypeddit or your own site to centralise:
- Pre-save links
- Mailing list sign-up
- Merch bundles
- Gig dates
- Teasers and videos
Having everything in one place makes it easier to promote and track clicks.
Pitch to Playlists and Blogs
2–3 weeks before release, send out your lead single to:
- Independent Spotify curators
- Blogs that support unsigned bands
- Local press and gig guides
- Radio shows or university stations
- Your own email list
Include your EPK, a short pitch and links to the track and press assets. Make their job easy.
Build a Run of Content Around Release Week
This is when momentum peaks - don’t waste it.
Post:
- Track-by-track breakdowns
- Fan reactions or quotes
- Behind-the-scenes clips
- Acoustic versions or remixes
- Limited edition merch or lyric sheets
- Thanks to collaborators and fans
Keep the energy high for at least a week after release.
Celebrate Properly
Whether it’s a headline launch gig, a listening party, a livestream Q&A or a merch drop - mark the moment. It makes your unsigned band’s release feel bigger and gives fans something to be part of.
Track, Learn, Repeat
After launch, check:
- Stream and follow growth
- Email list signups
- Merch sales
- Press and playlist feedback
Use it all to guide your next campaign. Every release gets easier and smarter.
Your First EP Is a Statement
It tells the world who you are and what you stand for. But without a plan, it’s just another upload. Treat your EP like the milestone it is - and give it the launch it deserves.
