Review: 8-bit Psycho

8-bit Psycho have taken a risk here and absolutely nailed it. And with a track this infectious, it’s safe to say this hearse isn’t just rolling in… it’s absolutely driving the scene forward.

Up next is the brilliantly unhinged 8-bit Psycho with the new single Midnight Hearse, taken from the upcoming album NESferatu. A one-piece act blending chiptune and psychobilly, performing with Nintendo consoles for beats and melody while handling upright bass and vocals – it’s a concept that already raises eyebrows before you even hit play.

The track opens with a warped, twisted take on an 80s Nintendo-style backing, instantly pulling you into a pixelated nightmare. Then the vocal creeps in and suddenly you’re deep inside something that is equal parts horror, humour and pure musical madness. On paper, mixing retro video game soundtracks with a funky, almost country-tinged vocal shouldn’t work… but somehow it absolutely does.

There’s a real Rob Zombie energy here, but with a sharper sense of fun and self-awareness. The track leans into its weirdness rather than holding back, and that’s exactly what makes it so effective. Beneath the novelty lies a genuinely well-crafted song – tight, catchy and full of clever ideas that keep it moving forward. It’s dark, playful and completely addictive.

What really stands out is the commitment to the concept. This isn’t a gimmick thrown together for a quick laugh – it’s a fully realised sound that feels fresh, different and surprisingly accessible. The hooks land, the groove sticks and before you know it, you’re reaching for repeat.

We’ll admit, we went in expecting a fun throwaway track… but came out with something far more memorable. This is the kind of song that deserves a permanent place on every Halloween playlist going.

8-bit Psycho have taken a risk here and absolutely nailed it. And with a track this infectious, it’s safe to say this hearse isn’t just rolling in… it’s absolutely driving the scene forward. Plus anyone who plays a Gameboy-inspired double bass deserves our upmost respect!
