Don’t You just love it when a band surprises you? When we saw the name Deithesis we were expecting some slabs of Norwegian Metal. Wow, how wrong we were. Deithisis has such an incredibly hard groove running through their music you cannot help nod in defiance.
First up is the epic “Beyond Tomorrow” which is melodic as it is heavy. The song has an incredible driving guitar and bass line whilst the soaring vocal takes you to another place. The drumbeat keeps the track pounding forward like a well drilled army. The song pulls you in and takes you on a journey into the world of Deithesis. This not your normal metal band but one with melody, groove and grind.
Up next is “Virtue” which once again takes you on a journey. It begins with an epic early Metallica trip before it just clicks in – man, this band is tight. The vocals on this track are next level and pull the song together, there is even a Serj Tankian feel to them in this track. We keep using the word “journey” for this band but one listen to “Virtue” will make you understand why. It’s pounding, then fast, then moody, then uplifting. Its takes you along with it. I love music which is not formulaic and “Virtue” is one of the best examples of this.
Finally, we have “Beckon Tragedy” which sound like a modern cut from Metallica’s best albums (Kill ‘em All, Mater of Puppets) whilst never losing sight of the bands unique song structure. The bass pounds on this one and along with the drums add a brooding overture. There is something very epic in the way these guys write songs. It is also worth noting the incredible fist pumping breakdown in this song – the office was pounding the sky along until the song is pierced by a stand out guitar solo.
If you are a fan of epic metal then do yourself a favour and listen to the whole Equilibrium E.P – I think you’ll find some new additions to your playlist.
