Next up we have Austian metal act, Faceless Object. A band with a viewpoint and a message.
First up is “Crossing” (side note – it has a truly terrifying, dark video). The chainsaw guitars hit you hard with a riff straight from the bowels of hell. The vocal is laden with despair, terror and doom – on occasion it almost becomes a “spoken word” vocal track before adding melodic textures. This makes the band deliver a truly unique sound. The breakdown section demands a slow head nod. This track is full of ideas and twists that one listen is simply not enough.
Next up is “Free” which rumbles into life with a solid bass groove. The track slowly builds adding darker, deeper textures. The layers grow, increase and build till the vocal hits. The signature sound is centred around this spoken word technique which makes the music hit harder. The track flows and has a solid groove which fits this so well. Faceless Objects know what they are about and have such a unique sound that just draws you in. Too many rock and metal acts follow the same tired formula – but not here, the ideas, textures, instruments and vocal style combine to create a piece of art, not your usual mtal act.
Finally, we get “unbroken” and its sweet, sweeping piano intro that is silenced by a dark, brooding metal chug and soaring riff – once again the ideas combined here work so well. “Unbroken” features a far more traditional vocal style and showcases the vocalists range. The song grinds along with some more than impressive guitar work. They really are the masters of “layered-metal”
