Today we are please to be hearing the latest offering from London-base punk monsters, Our Lives in Cinema.
“It has to be a Steinway” hits hard and is perfectly produced to give it that crisp party punk feel. Everything you want from a summer punk song is here. Driving guitars, rumbling bass, harmonised chorus – it's all here. This one needs to be played out loud. The vocal is so catchy and has more hooks than your local fishing competition. It’s currently raining outside Band Assist HQ but in the office its really sunny – all thanks to Our Lives in Cinema. There are some really great ideas on show here too from stops, tempo changes and some excellent drumming – enough to keep everyone interested and begging for a second listen.
Next up is “Selective History” which starts at a rapid pace and pulls you along. Again, the band are clearly masters of tempo changes which are performed effortlessly and give the band a far more dynamic sound compared to many of their peers. The song is simple and straightforward in such a great way and once again the chorus is insanely catchy. There is a passion and drive that these guys manage to bottle and capture on tape (or whatever people record on nowadays) – this is very rare in modern music and makes this E.P even more impressive
Just before you have time to catch your breath, in comes “Crushing Low” – this E.P is relentless. Once again the songwriting takes centre stage. Their use of space on this track is quite incredible and makes this song really stand out. I love how the song and vocals build to the chorus with passion and finesse. This is another great track with so many intertwined ideas that just work so well. Hell, there is even an acapella outro!
The E.P ends with “Dead Legends” and finishes the E.P perfectly, encompassing everything we know about the band over the last 3 tracks. The chopping guitars are reminiscent of 90’s pop/punk but with a modern twist. The almost pained vocal add passion to the proceedings and makes this one of their most immediate tracks. Hurry up and release some more tracks guys !
