Ruvellas – Modern Way of Loving (EP)

Dundee’s rising five-piece Ruvellas have set their sights on bringing back the heart and swagger of great British guitar music - and with Modern Way of Loving, they make a damn convincing case. The EP is a tight, melodic and joyfully confident collection that blends indie-pop charm with rock’n’roll grit, all delivered with an unmistakable Scottish flair.

Opening with “Skip to the Best Part,” Ruvellas instantly transport you to sunnier days. It’s a perfect slice of indie-pop gold, filled with tight instrumentation, effortlessly cool vocals and a touch of that Arctic Monkeys-meet-Bluetones magic. The band cleverly use silence as an instrument during the breakdown - a bold and brilliant move that gives the song a cinematic edge. It’s fun, breezy and polished - pure serotonin in sound form.

Next up, “Disco Lights” turns the dial up several notches. It’s funky, confident and swaggering with the kind of energy we haven’t heard since Primal Scream’s heyday. The bass grooves are irresistible, the guitar fuzz hits just right and the vocal harmonies elevate it to something special. The breakdown section? Electric. You can practically feel the crowd bouncing - this one was built for the stage and deserves a spot on Radio 1’s playlist.

“Time Will Tell” brings a more reflective tone, carried by a stomping, jangling rhythm and heartfelt storytelling. The lyrics feel honest and relatable - the sort of late-night confession every guy has lived through once or twice. The layered effects and pedal work create a distinctive texture, setting Ruvellas apart from the indie pack.

Then comes “Stun the World,” an anthem in waiting. The rhythm section drives hard while the vocals soar, building toward a massive singalong chorus. It’s packed with energy and that lift into the chorus is pure magic - pop-indie-rock done right.

Finally, “Take Me Higher” closes things on a euphoric note. The understated verses lead to a chorus that the Gallaghers themselves would nod in approval at. It’s catchy, confident and addictive - the kind of track that sticks in your head long after it fades out.

With Modern Way of Loving, Ruvellas have crafted an EP bursting with melody, attitude and ambition. If this is the modern way of loving, then we’re all in - because Ruvellas have just fallen head over heels into the future of British indie.
