We were lucky enough to get the 2 latest offerings from Ohio based futuristic metallers The Jotunn (I don’t know how to put the dots over the O but that’s my issue)
“Summoner” creeps in with a futuristic, garbled transmission that blindsides you once the thrash guitar erupts to kick this tune into life. Its hard, heavy and visceral but also there is a nod to the more epic and melodic which makes this more accessible to listeners. If you are a fan of double-kick drumming, this track has it in abundance. These guys have clearly defined their sound whilst not staying in their natural lane to deliver something that really breaks the mold.
Next up is “This Life Must End in Fear” – a monster of a track which has the most insane drumming we have heard in a while. The track is violent and aggressive but still holds an incredible melody helped by the keys and guitar line elevating the track beyond pure speed metal. The vocal is ferocious and in your face as you expect, and want, with such music. The song has everything including some impressive time changes to give listeners something truly unique.
For fans of: Dimmu Borgir, Satyricon and thoughtful Metal
