Unspeakable Monday – “Greatest Goodbye”
Edinburgh’s Unspeakable Monday crash back onto the scene with “Greatest Goodbye,” a fiery, emotionally charged anthem that perfectly captures the chaos of heartbreak and the catharsis that follows. Formed during a chance Monday music session back in 2021, the band - Bekah (vocals/lyrics), Xander (drums), Kris (bass) and Will (guitar) - have carved out a distinctive niche in Scotland’s alternative scene, blending nostalgia-fuelled pop-punk energy with a raw, modern edge.
“Greatest Goodbye” tells the story of a relationship’s final collapse - that gut-wrenching moment of seeing the one you love with someone else and clawing your way through every stage of grief. Musically, it’s a love child of Paramore’s “Misery Business,” Avril Lavigne’s “Sk8er Boi,” and Taylor Swift’s “Better Than Revenge” - an adrenaline rush for both the early-2000s kids and a new generation of rock lovers.
The track erupts from the first second with bombastic drums and a growling bassline before the guitars ignite into full flight. Bekah’s vocal is instantly gripping - fresh, emotive and totally unique, straddling vulnerability and venom in perfect balance. The verses are breezy, almost deceptively so, before crashing headfirst into the gritty, distorted guitars that drive the chorus. The lyrics are sharp and cinematic, painting heartbreak not as a pity party, but as a reclaiming of power - bitter, bold and beautifully honest.
The dream-like middle eight offers a momentary lull - layers of sound build tension before the band come roaring back with a controlled explosion of noise. The finale is pure chaos — screaming guitars, pounding bass and cymbals colliding in glorious disarray. It’s the kind of ending Kurt Cobain would’ve smiled at.
“Greatest Goodbye” is a masterclass in melodic rage - perfectly crafted, unapologetically loud and emotionally real. Unspeakable Monday have bottled the messy, magnificent feeling of heartbreak and turned it into an anthem.
If this is the “Greatest Goodbye,” we can’t wait to hear what they say hello to next.
