We just received the latest E.P from American rockers, Wormwood Project – “Ghosts” is a 5-song audio assault and is a new favourite here at Band Assist HQ
The E.P rumbles into life with the winding, spiraling intro to “The Broken & the Damned” This is a sign of intent with a hint of 90’s Sludge and Grunge but with a more modern feel. The track has a powerful bass and drum pattern pulling the song along whilst the guitar adds a layer to create something very different. The vocals and lyrics are the stand out on this track which harks back to the 90’s greats plus is reminiscent of the epic, cult band “Cold”. An interesting start that brings you into the world of the Wormwood Project.
“Tonight We Dine with Crows” whispers into existence with a mellow drawl from the impressive frontman whilst the guitar line takes centre stage before the song literally explodes into life. This must be an epic live track. There is a dark and brooding edge to this song with the pained vocals giving this song a real sense of authenticity. The vocal line and guitar work so well together often pulling in different directions before reconnecting to lift the song. The song winds down beautifully
“(A Keening) The Hollows – Wow, just wow. Play this song now. This is so unique, so different and a real cacophony of sound. It's like REM playing with White Zombie trying to cover The Doors before bursting into life and a more straightforward rock sound. The verse has a nodding, grinding nature with lyrics that are really creative and atmospheric. A Keening) The Hollows is unlike anything we’ve heard with so many ideas going on but without being too out there. It truly is the Project’s masterpiece and you hear something different with every listen.
“Temperence” is a vocal-led journey. The lead singer is extremely talented in terms of lyrics, inflection and tone. The soft, brooding and mysterious intro is crushed by an epic winding riff that would be the ultimate “drop” live. The song rises to an epiphany moment which shows a different side to the band and highlights the versatility of the band.
And now for something very different. Bound crashes through the speaker before falling back into the melancholy refrain of the verse. Bound shows once again, the Project are masters of “the build” and the dual vocals on this track add a new depth whilst the pounding bass and drums force the listener to strap in until the grinding verse returns.
A great E.P with zero “filler” and a band with a clear definition of their sound.
