Why Selling Physical Music Still Matters for Unsigned Bands
Vinyl, CD's, Tapes.....remember them?

In a digital-first world, vinyl, CDs and cassettes still have power — here’s how to use them
Streaming is convenient. It’s how most people hear music now. But for unsigned bands, physical music - vinyl, CDs, even cassettes — isn’t dead. In fact, it's one of the best ways to make money, stand out and give fans something real to hold onto.
It’s not about replacing digital. It’s about adding value beyond the stream.
Physical = Emotional
A stream is gone in seconds. A record or CD sits on a shelf, gets handled, remembered. Physical formats feel personal. They turn your music into a thing -something collectible, giftable and meaningful.
That matters when you’re trying to build a real connection as an unsigned band.
You Don’t Need to Press 1,000 Copies
Start small. Companies like DMS Vinyl, GZ Media, or Band CDs offer short runs of 50–100 units. You can also pre-sell to fans before ordering — reducing your risk.
Bundle your physical release with something extra:
Lyric booklets
Handwritten notes
Signed artwork
Behind-the-scenes photos
Make the physical item feel special, like a limited edition souvenir from your journey.
CDs Are Still Worth It
Despite the hype around vinyl, CDs are cheaper to make, easier to post, and still work well at gigs. Many cars and home stereos still have CD players. And fans who want to support you often buy something — a CD is often their go-to.
Cassettes? Niche, but cool. Especially for lo-fi, punk, DIY or retro acts.
Use Physical Releases as Launch Moments
When you’ve got a physical drop, you can turn it into a campaign:
Tease the packaging and design
Show video clips of you unboxing the first batch
Host a small launch party or gig where you sell the first copies
Offer early access to your mailing list or Patreon supporters
Make it an event, not just a merch item.
Use Bandcamp to Power It All
Bandcamp is the best platform for unsigned bands selling physical music. It handles shipping, offers pay-what-you-want pricing, and gives you full control. Plus, Bandcamp Fridays (where they waive fees) are a great time to push sales.
Add streaming codes or downloads with every purchase to keep digital fans happy.
Build Scarcity and Value
You don’t need to sell hundreds of records. Selling 25 copies of a £10 CD is more profit than 10,000 streams. And when you treat your physical drops like limited runs, fans respond.
Think in terms of editions: “Only 50 copies with this artwork.”
It creates urgency — and gives buyers something rare.
Physical Isn't Dead — It’s Special
Your unsigned band isn’t competing with major labels on marketing budgets. But you can win on intimacy, authenticity and handmade value. That’s what physical releases represent. And that’s what fans still pay for.
